About Opportunity Zones

The City of Memphis and Shelby County currently have 8 designated Opportunity Zones representing approximately 13% of the city’s total population. These zones were determined based on multiple strategic factors, including business development/brownfield redevelopment opportunities, retail/commercial/tourism development opportunities, community and rural development initiatives, low-income housing development opportunities, and proximity to entrepreneur centers, technology transfer offices, and colleges and universities.

Investors are given federal tax incentives to re-invest their capital gains into Opportunity Funds, which are specialized vehicles dedicated to investing in designated low-income areas. This new capital then drives economic development and job creation in distressed communities.
