Renowned economist Dr. Dell Gines visited Memphis this week to participate in a series of economic development events in collaboration with EDGE. Dr. Gines, a leading expert in economic revitalization and inclusive growth, engaged with Memphis Mayor Paul Young, local leaders, and community members during his visit, offering insights and expertise to further the city’s economic progress.
Dr. Gines spent time immersed in various economic development programs and initiatives. He served as a special guest during the EDGE Finance, Port of Memphis, and EDGE Board Meetings on Wednesday, March 20. He continued his tour of the city taking part in the Shelby County Joint Economic & Community Development Board (JECDB) Board of Directors and Executive Committee Meeting, as well as EDGE’s Small Business Incentive Advisory Committee meeting.
During his visit, Dr. Gines met with key stakeholders in various sectors to discuss strategies for promoting economic growth and addressing the unique challenges faced by the Memphis community. He emphasized the importance of inclusive economic development, recognizing that sustainable growth must benefit all segments of the population. From a community tour and meeting previous Inner City Economic Development (ICED) Loan program recipients to engaging with Mayor Young and senior EDGE leadership, Dr. Gines saw a comprehensive picture of the current economic landscape in Memphis.
One of the highlights of Dr. Gines’ visit was a candid discussion with local entrepreneurs and business leaders during the Small Business Advisory Committee meeting, focused on the role of small businesses in driving economic development and creating job opportunities.
